For this episode of Private Parts Unknown, host Courtney Kocak welcomes Belizean food anthropologist, author, and Taste Belize Tours founder Lyra Spang for another never-before-released interview from our 2021 reporting trip to Belize.

Lyra grew up in rural Belize, later lived in Washington, D.C. (where she attended undergrad with former co-host Sofiya Alexandra!), and went on to study anthropology, as well as human sexuality at the Kinsey Institute—giving her a unique perspective on the differences between American and Belizean attitudes toward sex, relationships, gender, and culture in general.

Lyra gets candid about what it’s like to be sexually open in a conservative Christian culture, why kink and ethical non-monogamy largely stay underground, and how LGBTQ+ visibility in Belize has changed since she was growing up. We also talk about blended families and co-parenting, passport privilege and the hurdles Belizeans face traveling to the United States, drug trafficking and gangs, political corruption, feminism and traditional gender roles, and Belize’s deeply homosocial culture—where men and women often socialize separately and even friendships across genders can be viewed through a sexual lens. Plus, Lyra explains why Americans can mistake a shared language for a shared culture, and what visitors and expats should understand about Belize before assuming they’ve got the place figured out.
