For the 281st episode of Private Parts Unknown, host Courtney Kocak welcomes Pirjo Suhonen, co-founder of Ivana Helsinki, for a never-before-released conversation from our 2019 reporting trip to Finland.
Pirjo takes us behind the scenes of Ivana Helsinki, the Finnish fashion, art, and film house she built with her sister, Paola. We talk about what makes their sisterly collaboration work, why personal style matters more than fashion trends, and their documentary about legendary porn star Nina Hartley, which challenges assumptions about sex workers while exploring feminism, sexuality, aging, and the female gaze. We also get into Pirjo's sweet story of rekindled romance, how Finnish dating differs from candlelit dinners, and how Finland's deeply ingrained feminism shapes relationships and gender roles. Plus, we discuss the independence of Finnish women, the country's generous parental leave and childcare benefits, and its surprising restrictions on surrogacy.
